At the Forst/Ställa landfill site in Schaan, an existing operational area is being transformed into a local source of renewable energy – without restricting its original function. With the HELIOFLEX® solar folding roof, the Municipality of Schaan is making dual use of the small delivery area: operations continue at ground level, while solar power is generated above.
Solar energy without restricting operations
At a landfill site, a photovoltaic system needs to do more than simply generate electricity. Vans, trucks and construction vehicles must still be able to move around the site with as few restrictions as possible.
For this reason, the HELIOFLEX® steel structure was designed specifically to meet the operational requirements of the site. A clear height of 4.35 metres, wide column spacing and only a small number of supports within the operating area provide generous space for vehicle movements beneath the system.
The delivery area therefore remains fully usable for logistics, deliveries and larger vehicles even after the installation of the solar folding roof.
The project demonstrates how photovoltaic systems can be integrated into areas that are already in use – without requiring additional land and without compromising their existing purpose.
205.92 kWp above an existing operational area
A total of 396 solar modules with an installed capacity of 205.92 kWp are installed above an area of around 1,800 m². The solar folding roof is expected to generate approximately 217 MWh of solar electricity per year.
A key advantage of the project is that a large share of the electricity generated can be used directly in the immediate vicinity. A substantial proportion of the solar power is supplied to the neighbouring Gebr. Hilti AG BauUnternehmung.
Around 70% of the forecast solar electricity production can therefore be used locally. The electricity generated by HELIOFLEX® helps cover part of the power demand at the neighbouring company site with locally produced renewable energy.
Dual use instead of competing for space
The project in Schaan combines two requirements that might initially appear to compete with one another: an intensively used operational area and the production of renewable energy.
HELIOFLEX® makes both possible on the same site. When extended, the solar folding roof generates electricity while also providing shade. In the event of snow or storms, the roof can be moved into its protected parking position. The area underneath remains available for its original operational purpose.
The Forst/Ställa landfill project therefore demonstrates how existing infrastructure can be used intelligently for the energy transition: operations at ground level, solar power above – with as much of the electricity generated as possible being used directly on site.
