Solar power above an existing parking area: HELIOFLEX® in Vaduz

At Fabrikweg in Vaduz, HELIOFLEX® demonstrates how existing parking areas can be used to generate solar power without giving up their original function. Above a parking area of around 2,100 m², the foldable solar roof generates up to 297,000 kWh of solar electricity per year with an installed capacity of 312 kWp.

A total of 600 photovoltaic modules are distributed across 15 movable foldable roof sections. The area remains fully usable as a car park while gaining a second function as a local energy generation site.

 

Photovoltaics above a car park – without using additional land

Car parks offer significant potential for solar power generation. At the same time, they are needed every day for access, parking and operational processes. HELIOFLEX® makes it possible to use these areas for two purposes at once.

Instead of using additional greenfield or open land for photovoltaics, the already sealed surface at Fabrikweg is used to generate solar electricity. The lightweight structure spans the parking area at a clear height of 4.3 metres, leaving the space underneath largely open and accessible.

The project therefore combines two uses on the same area: parking and renewable energy generation.

 

A movable structure instead of a rigid parking canopy

Unlike a conventional rigid parking canopy, the PV modules of HELIOFLEX® are arranged on movable foldable roof sections.

An automated control system and a weather station continuously monitor conditions at the site. In the event of storms, hail or snowfall, the module sections automatically move into their protected folded position.

The installation in Vaduz consists of five fields with three foldable roof sections each. Each section carries 40 PV modules. The cableway-inspired mechanism and lightweight construction make it possible to span large areas with a comparatively slender supporting structure.

 

Added value for the parking area

In addition to generating solar power, the foldable solar roof provides further benefits for the parking area. When the module sections are extended, they provide extensive shading for the area below.

At the same time, the open and movable construction is deliberately different from a fully enclosed carport roof. When the foldable solar roof is retracted, the area opens up considerably towards the sky, helping to preserve flexibility in the use of the infrastructure.

The project therefore demonstrates an alternative to conventional PV carports for sites where a lightweight, movable structure and flexible use of the space below are key requirements.

 

Existing infrastructure becomes a solar power plant

Especially in densely developed areas, the question is increasingly where additional space for renewable energy generation can be found.

The project at Fabrikweg demonstrates one possible approach: upgrading already sealed infrastructure for energy production rather than using additional land.

On around 2,100 m², the existing parking function is combined with a solar power plant producing up to 297,000 kWh of electricity per year.

 

Completed within twelve months

The short implementation period is another distinguishing feature of the project in Vaduz. The contract was signed on 31 March 2025. By the end of February 2026, the foldable solar roof had already begun generating electricity. Final acceptance took place on 30 March 2026.

Only one year passed between signing the contract and final acceptance of the complete system.

This was made possible by close cooperation between the Municipality of Vaduz, the Vaduz Energy Commission, the specialist companies involved and the project team at dhp Technology.

HELIOFLEX® at Fabrikweg is a visible reference for the intelligent dual use of parking areas: for mobility and, at the same time, for local solar power generation.
